George Mason University, often referred to as simply Mason or GMU, is a public university situated south and adjacent to the city of Fairfax, which is an independent city, in unincorporated Fairfax County, VA. The city inherited its name from Thomas Fairfax, the 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, being officially renamed The Town of Fairfax, in 1874, becoming an independent city in 1961.
GMU was named after George Mason, founding father, American revolutionary and patriot, and was founded as a branch of University of Virginia in 1957, becoming an independent institution, in 1972. The university is known for its programs in economics, law, computer science and creative writing, having an enrollment of more than 32 000 students, which makes it the largest university in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
It has been highly ranked by famous magazines such as U.S. News & World Report, which ranked GMU 1st in its new category of `Up-and-coming National Universities` (2008), and according to the Princeton Review, the university is on the 4th place among the most diverse university in the nation.
The athletic teams from GMU are known as the George Mason Patriots, who are best known for their achievements in basketball, and who compete in NCAA's Division I, in various men's and women's sports, also being members of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The Patriots, who had never won an NCAA tournament, before 2006, became the 1st team from the CAA, as well as the 1st true mid-major conference team since 1979, to reach the Final Four.
